Harry Potter

What would you say if someone told you that YOU are an abomination to God?

I'll never forget the day I was told that, because it was to change my life forever. To a statement like that, one can either go into self-defense, or one can investigate the claim. I investigated it. That was 32 years ago, and there's no way I could adequately thank the one who said that to me. Because it changed my life.

I was a very troubled young person, and the means I took to search out what might help me was the only means I hadn't yet pursued - the world of the "occult." I define "occult" as anything having to do with the psychic world, fortune tellers, mediums, astrologers, etc, etc. I never connected the two -- that while I was investigating these things my life was falling apart. The story ends, or rather begins, when I was told I was an abomination to God.

And the fact is, I WAS.

Religion was the last thing on my mind, because I had been raised in a very legalistic church, and nothing I did or tried within that context had helped me. So I was looking elsewhere.

Now I'm going to put that story on pause, it's a very long story, but I need at this time to get back to the point. The point is, tonight the last in the series of Harry Potter books is due to be released. If you are at all interested in pursuing the discussion with me, I invite you to email me. Otherwise, all I'll say about it is that anyone getting involved in any occult practice IS an abomination to God and there are very terrible consequences.

Hey, don't get mad at me, I didn't write The Book. But I have come to know its Author, and there's nothing in life more important to me now, than helping others to come to know him too. I'm no longer troubled, I have "the peace that passes all understanding." I've found the meaning to life, the purpose for which I was put here, and the joyful privilege of walking with the One who called me. C'mon along with me. It's an awesome adventure.

Here's the reference:

"There shall not be found among you anyone who:
makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire,
or who uses divination,
or an observer of times (astrology),
or an enchanter,
or a witch,
or a charmer,
or a consulter with familiar spirits (a medium),
or a wizard (magician)
or a necromancer (one who contacts the dead).

For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord"

Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Paula, it is amazing how many people, old and young will flock to all of the occultist and "New Age" garbage that comes along, yet anything having to do with God is pushed out of their minds and hearts.

Though many may not know it or want to believe it, even the Earth Day celebrations are part of the occult.

I believe that the world is spinning so far out of control that we are fast approaching the point of no return.

Abouna, we may be at that point, and if not, yes we are close. All the foretold signs are there. I hear the Lord is doing a mighty work in other countries, including the Middle East, countries where the Gospel hasn't been preached for the most part, but here in America people have heard it for decades and have pretty much made up their minds by now. I suspect that anyone coming in now is going to get in just by the skin of their chinny chin chin!

If they get in at all, Paula.

Yes, I know about Harry Potter. The dangerous part of it is that it may lead children into wanting to learn more about the occult. When the Potter series first came out I didn't realize that and my granddaughter devoured the series. The only good thing about the book is that it encouraged kids to read, but content should indeed count for something. Happily, my granddaughter just took it as entertainment and nothing more. She is not delving into the occult, thank God, but she has been raised to know better than that. I'm worried about many other children who read it, especially children with no Christian upbringing.

Gayle, that's how Satan entraps people, and in this case, children. He doesn't go around with a sign saying, "Here I come, I'm the enemy of your soul and I mean to destroy you." No, what does the Scripture say - that he comes as "an angel of light." So benignly, so insidiously, disguised as "light" something good and appealing -to entrap even the very elect if that were possible.

I've not read Harry and I probably won't let my kids do so either. I "dabbled" when I was much younger. The occult holds that facination of available "power" and, in it's lighter stages, the "thrill" of possible danger.

In the latter stages it brings nothing but death and darkness and destruction.

I want my kids to hunger for God. I want them to HATE that which He calls abominable. Somehow I can't marry that passion for God with reading books and watching movies that feature the occult.

What confuses me is how many wonderful, steadfast Christiians DO love the HP series. Some of these are not even flighty, immature teens. They are solid, Bible-believing adults.

I'm not sure I understand how they can, on the one hand, truly love the Holy God of Heaven, AND at the same time, enjoy and rave about an occult based, non-redemptive story line.
